Text Manager Update

The Text Manager dialog contains tools to relate text on a map to database attributes.

The dialog provides a set of text tools to perform the following tasks:

  • Insert new database records from text elements.
  • Join text elements to existing database records.
  • Update database records to reflect text strings.
  • Populate text strings based upon database column values.

In general, these tools work on either text strings or text nodes. When text elements are used for Insert, Join, and Update, only the first column named in the Column text field applies. But, if a text node is used, all columns apply.

Setting Description
Insert Creates new database records from text strings or text nodes. Each new record will be given a unique MSLINK value. The values of the associated text strings or text nodes are inserted into the specified columns. For example, if text strings are used and the table value is LOT and the column value is NUM, OWNER, test strings will set the LOT.NUM column only. If text nodes with two or more text strings are used, both LOT.NUM and LOT.OWNER columns are set.
Join Links text elements to existing database records. The value of the text element corresponds to a value in a unique database record. Join searches for a match between the text element value and the specified table column value. Join uses the record's MSLINK value to construct a database linkage for the element.
Update Modifies database records to reflect value changes made to associated text strings. Update assumes that the text nodes/strings are linked to a database row.
Select Loads values that are stored in the columns specified in the Columns field into text node/strings. For text nodes, all columns are used, for text strings, only the first column is used. If the text strings or text nodes identified are in the master file, they are modified and the original text information is not displayed. If they are in an attached reference, the new text nodes or text strings are written to the master file.
